DEPARTMENT: Clinical Education
SCHEDULE: Part-time, 20hrs/week; SHIFT: Day; Tuesday, Wednesday 8:00am to 4:30pm, Thursday 8:00am to 12:00noon
EDUCATION: BSN required. Current California RN license required. Clinical Masters in Nursing, in area of specialization, is required. Current CPR certificate required. Graduate of accredited school of nursing. California Clinical Nurse Specialist Certification in area of specialty required. ACLS or PALS Certification preferred.
Must have a National Provider Identifier (NPI), or obtain an NPI, prior to employment start date.
POSITION SUMMARY: Provides in-depth clinical expertise in a defined area of nursing practice (eg., pediatrics, oncology, adult medicine). Develops and ensures quality standards for nursing practice for a specific patient population. Provides advanced clinical practice education, consultation, research and administration.
QUALIFICATIONS: Three years experience in area of specialty required. Demonstrated clinical expertise in area of specialty. Prior Clinical Nurse Specialist experience preferred.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Three to five years experience in perinatal nursing with demonstrated clinical expertise in area of specialty. Two years of experience as a perinatal clinical nurse specialist. Masters degree in Nursing required. AWHONN Fetal Heart Monitoring Instructor preferred, NRP instructor preferred.

DUTIES: Establishes and monitors care standards and makes recommendations for changes in area of clinical practice.
Collaborates with nursing staff in assessing patient, family age-specific nursing needs and develops plan of care for complex high-risk patients. Evaluates the effectiveness of the care provided.
Designs teaching programs for patients/families and provides assistance to nursing staff in program implementation. Develops interdisciplinary plans of care for complex and high risk patients. In conjunction with members of the health care team, assesses staff knowledge and identifies competency-based education needs of staff and members. Designs and implements education programs to ensure the quality of staff knowledge and skills. Introduces new techniques/innovation based on advanced practice trends. May serve as a preceptor to graduate healthcare students.
Provides consultation to physicians, nurses and other heath care providers in meeting care needs of individual or groups of patients in both outpatient and inpatient settings.
Makes recommendations to change standards of care or standards of practice based on own research or the research of others. Defines and implements best nursing practices.
Assists in interviewing staff and provides input into evaluations regarding clinical competence and provides coaching and counseling.
Participates and consults in setting the direction for QA&I monitoring, establishing standards and evaluating outcomes. Collects and analyzes data regarding patient care outcomes, trends, morbidity and mortality.
PREFERRED DUTIES: The perinatal clinical nurse specialist possesses knowledge and in-depth experience in the care of perinatal patients. Primary responsibilities include designing, implementing and evaluating programs that meet the learning and development needs of the perinatal nursing staff. Develops , implements, monitors, and evaluates effectiveness of orientation/training/ cross training programs for perinatal staff. Participates in the development of care standards and makes recommendations for changes in area of perinatal clinical practice. Collaborates with nursing staff in assessing patient, family age-specific nursing needs and develops plan of care for the complex, high-risk perinatal patient. Evaluates the effectiveness of the care provided. Designs teaching programs for patients/families and provides assistance to nursing staff in program implementation. Develops interdisciplinary plans of care for complex and high risk patients. In conjunction with members of the health care team, assesses staff knowledge and identifies competency-based education needs of staff. Introduces new techniques/innovation as appropriate to the perinatal department. May serve as a preceptor to graduate healthcare students. Provides consultation to physicians, nurses and other health care providers in meeting care needs of individual or groups of patients in both inpatient and outpatient care settings. Defines and implements best nursing practices. Provides input into evaluations regarding clinical competence. Collaborates with leadership to improve quality and efficiency throughout the continuum of clinical care. Reviews and updates policies and procedures, performance standards and clinical competencies. Coordinates programs to keep staff up to date on new equipment and techniques. Assists with programs on mandatory topics (i.e. fire safety, workplace safety, infection control practices, etc.) Participates in community based programs that are pertinent to the perinatal patient. Collaborates with other team members of the Clinical Education Department to meet the educational needs of nursing staff.
